CHARLESTON, S.C. - Boston College's Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) threw a complete-game, three-hitter to help BC defeat host College of Charleston 9-0 in the opening game of a seven-inning doubleheader Sunday in Charleston. A third-inning, 10-run effort by the Cougars in the nightcap prevented a BC sweep as C of C took the 19-11 decision in game two. The Eagles improved to 2-2 after splitting with C of C Saturday. The College of Charleston is now 3-4.
Langone went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs in addition to his stellar four-strikeout pitching performance. The senior ace also did not issue any free passes. Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) hit his second home run in two days while swinging a perfect 4-for-4 in the game.
The Eagles registered five runs in their final at bat to seal the victory. Langone homered with one out. Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.) drove in Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.), who doubled down the right field line. That was one of two RBIs for McCarthy. McCarthy and Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) scored unearned runs.
Junior Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.) went 3-for-4 to lead the Eagles in the nightcap. Langone had two more hits for the Eagles, including his fifth double of the season. Third baseman Chris Rosado (Stamford, Conn.) also picked up a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Mark Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) recorded the loss on the mound, allowing 10 runs in the third while striking out five batters.
At weekend's end, Langone tops all Eagle batters with his .571 average. Five of his eight hits are doubles with one home run. Mendoza has eight hits in 16 at bats for .500 batting average, but his six RBIs is a BC best.
The Eagles head for an eight-day training trip in Florida. Their first contest will be the annual exhibition contest with the Boston Red Sox March 3. Game time is to be announced.
