Men's and Women's Track fall to Harvard

In women's track and field events, Boston College took three first places finishes to Harvard's 13. In the 800-meter , freshman Jen Kramer won the close race by .4 second with 2:18.5. Fifth year All-American Shannon Smith won the one-mile race in 4:53.0, while cross country All-American sophomore Maggie Guiney ran close behind with 4:55.3, taking second place. Taking the top three spots in the 3,000 meter run were junior (cross country All-American) Katie Ryan in first (9:59.1), sophomore (cross country All-American) Cate Guiney in second (10:06.1) and freshman Jen Donovan in third (10:20.1).
Also with a strong a performances for the Eagles were junior Zoey O'Sullivan and sophomore Nikki Pogue taking back-to back second and third places, respectively, in the 60-meter dash. In the 400-meter race sophomores Melissa Connell and Rachel D'Amora finished in second and third. Senior captain Kate Sullivan took second place in the 60-meter low hurdles. In field events for the Eagles, senior Kristyn O'Brien pole vaulted to second place.
In the men's track and field events, Boston College took five first place finishes. Senior captain Jeff Normant won the 500-meter race with a time of 1:06.0. Another senior captain won his race. Dan Fitzgerald took first in the 800-meter run. In the 1,000-meter race, the Eagles took the top two spots with sophomore Vernon Mickle taking first and senior captain Mike McKenzie in second. Junior Tony Beirne threw to a first place finish in the 35 pond weight. In the 4 x 400 relay, the Eagles ran to a first place finish.
Putting forth a good performance for the Eagles was sophomore Gabe Verdauguer in second in the long jump. Also taking second places for the Eagles were junior Shedrick Gavin in the 60-meter dash, senior Mark Johnson in the 400-meter, Kevin Lyons in the pole vault and the mile relay.
The Boston College men's and women's will next compete, after a month off, when they travel to Hanover, N.H. to participate in the Dartmouth College Relays on Saturday, Jan. 14. The time has yet to be announced.
