A first baseman, McGowan was Boston College's top hitter, finishing with a .432 batting average (63-for-146) in 39 games. His batting average currently ranks him 18th nationally. McGowan also led the Eagles with 16 home runs, three triples, 55 RBI and 129 total bases. He scored a team-high 49 runs. The junior first baseman/pitcher registered two or more hits in 22 games, including three four-hit contests. He had 18 multiple-RBI games. On the mound, McGowan made six relief appearances, totalling 5.0 innings.
McGowan's 63 hits rank as the second-highest single-season total in Boston College baseball history. Brian Kelley, a 1991 graduate, set the school record with 67 hits in his junior season. McGowan, who recorded 62 hits one year ago, and current assistant coach Michael Martin, a 1994 graduate, are the only players ever to record back-to-back 60-hit seasons. No player has ever had 60 or more hits in three consecutive seasons.
Langone, the designated hitter/first baseman/pitcher who was selected as the second team's utilityman, finished his sophomore campaign with a .401 batting average (57-for-142). He was the only BC team member to play in -- and start -- all 41 games. Langone finished second on the team (behind McGowan) with 57 hits, nine home runs, 36 RBI, 99 total bases and 41 runs scored. The sophomore had a 4-5 pitching record in 10 starts. He threw a team-high six complete games. He finished with a 5.12 earned run average and registered a team-high 53 strikeouts in 63.1 innings.
The Eagles finished the 1998 season with a 17-23-1 record.
