Three Eagle Baseball Players Earn All-Big East Honors

CHESNUT HILL, Mass. - Three Boston College baseball players -- senior first baseman Sean McGowan (Burlington, Mass./Burlington), senior catcher Jeff Waldron (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical) and junior pitcher/designated hitter Stephen Langone (Reading, Mass./ Reading) - earned All-BIG EAST honors. The awards were announced at the league's annual banquet that precedes the conference tournament that will be held at Waterfront Park in Trenton, N.J. from May 19-22.
McGowan and Waldron captured first team honors, while Langone was the designated hitter on the second team. Only twice before - in 1991 and 1995 -- in the league's 15-history has Boston College had three players selected to the All-League teams.
The All-Conference selections are voted on by the league's 11 head coaches.
McGowan completed the 1999 baseball season with a .430 batting average and 25 home runs. He ranks among the nation's leaders in both categories. In 1999, he established Boston College single-season marks in hits (77), home runs and RBIs (70). The senior enjoyed 25 multiple-hit games and 18 multiple-RBI games. The senior hit two home runs in six different games.
Waldron batted .399 (67-for-168) while playing in all 48 games. The team's co-captain, he tied for the team lead with 15 doubles. He also recorded seven home runs, 33 RBIs, and scored 46 runs.
Langone was the Eagles' top pitcher as well as a top offensive threat. Honored as a designated hitter, he batted .332 with 11 doubles and 13 home runs. He tied for the team lead with 60 runs scored. On the mound, he led the staff with eight wins (an 8-4 record), 15 appearances, 11 games started, five complete games and 85.1 inning pitched. He concluded the season by blanking West Virginia, 5-0, in a complete-game effort on May 16.
Led by first-year head coach Peter Hughes, Boston College finished the 1999 season with a 26-21-1 record, setting a school record for wins in one season.
