Softball off to a Rough Start

Chestnut Hill, Mass.---The defending BIG EAST champions, Boston College has gotten off to a rough start . The Eagles are in Columbus, GA to start the 1999 season at the Leadoff Classic. Boston College went 0-5 at the Leadoff Classic.
BC opened the season on Friday against the defending NCAA National Champions, Fresno State. The Bulldogs came into the game 7-0. The Eagles took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Fresno State answered with single-runs in the fourth, fifth and six innings to win the game 3-2. The game winning hit came on a solo home run.

In the second game on Friday the Eagles took on South Carolina. Joyce McMillins and Megan Matthews combined to shutout BC 2-0. The Eagles only hits were two by Summer Jarratt and one each by Chris Vicari and Jennifer Murray.

In action on Saturday morning the Eagles took on Southern Illinois. The game remained scoreless until the seventh inning when the Saluki got two runs off of Gretchen Thompson. Anne Marie Ambros and Jennifer Murray had the only hits for the Eagles. Mary Dietz had a no-hitter thru 5.1 innings,

In the second game on Saturday night BC took on Nebraska. The Eagles got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first, but the Cornhuskers came right back in the bottom of the first scoring four runs of their own. Lauren Fischetti faced five batters and gave up four runs before she was pulled for freshman Brooke Shull. Chris Vicari and Fischetti got the only hits for the Eagles.

In the last game off the tournament for the Eagles, they fell to the University of Connecticut 3-2. BC played well, but gave up two runs in the bottom of the fourth after being tied at one. Cristin Brown and Chris Vicari each drove in a run for the Eagles.

In the first weeekend of the season the Boston College Eagles played well, but could not muster a victory at the Leadoff Classic in Columbus, GA. Junior Mary Dietz pitched well, highlighted by 5.1 innings of no-hit ball versus Southern Illinois. Dietz had 16 strikeouts, only allowing 14 hits in 18.2 innings during the tournament. Sophomore Jenn Perrotta led the team going 4-12(.333) in tournament with an RBI.
Boston College will be off until March 18 when the take on Fairfield at the Heights.
