Softball Player Is Honored as Pitcher of the Week

CHESTNUT HILL, MA-- Boston College sophomore Mary Dietz (San Manuel, Arizona) was named BIG EAST Conference Pitcher of the Week on April 27. The award marked the fourth time this season that a member of the Boston College softball team has earned BIG EAST Conference weekly honors, and it was the second time that Dietz has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
Dietz registered 22 strikeouts in 13.1 conference innings pitched last weekend and set a BIG EAST single-season record for strikeouts with 101. She is currently third in the nation in strikeouts (10.1 per seven innings) and is tied for 10th with three saves.
Dietz pitched in six games this past week and registered a 3-1 record and one save. The sophomore pitched 28 innings and allowed 12 hits, two runs (two earned) and had 40 strikeouts. Her victories were against Harvard (2-0) on April 21, Yale (6-0) on April 24, and St. John's (10-0) on April 26. Dietz's one loss was at St. John's (1-0) on April 25.
In the 2-0 victory over Harvard, she pitched a complete game, allowed four hits, and had 12 strikeouts. She also pitched a complete game at Yale, allowing two hits, and recording five strikeouts. Dietz pitched five innings in the 10-0 victory over St. John's on April 26, and allowed only one hit. She registered a save in the 7-6 victory at St. John's on April 25. Dietz currently has a 14-4 overall record.
Three Eagles have received BIG EAST weekly honors this season. In addition to Dietz, sophomore Lauren Fischetti earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week (April 20) honors. Freshman Jennifer Perrotta was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week (April 6).
Boston College will compete in the conference tournament at Notre Dame on May 2-3. The Eagles earned the top seed in the North Division after clinching the regular season title with a 13-3-1 league record. Rutgers will be Boston College's opponent in the first game of the conference tournament.
