CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College Head Football Coach Tom O'Brien has named senior Scott Mutryn (6-3, 212, Middleburg Heights, OH) the starting quarterback for the Eagles' Sept. 5 season opener at Georgia Tech.
Mutryn was in contention for the starting quarterback position in spring practice of 1996 when he broke a bone in his right thumb during the final drill before the spring game. He battled back from the injury to win starting nods against Hawaii in the season opener and Miami in the fall finale, and played a pivotal back-up role in between. Last season, he completed 223 of 35 passes for 202 yards. He started against Georgia Tech, completing 20 of 31 passes for 182 yards.
O'Brien also announced that offensive guard Doug Brzezinski (6-5, 305, Livonia, MI) and linebacker Brian Maye (6-3, 227, Valley Cottage, NY) have been named team captains in a vote by their teammates.
Brzezinski, a 1998 Football News pre-season All-BIG EAST selection, returns for his fourth year as a starter on the Eagles' offensive line. Maye underwent successful neck surgery (cervical disk) this past spring. Following outstanding 1993, '94 and '96 seasons (he injured his right knee during the 1995 season and received a medical redshirt), Maye missed the entire 1997 season because of the neck injury. Based on his medical problems, he appealed to the NCAA and received an extension to complete his football eligibility in 1998.
Maye has completed all post-surgery medical testing and has been cleared to participate by Dr. Diane English.
O'Brien also announced that defensive back Mike Bullock (5-10, 172, Jr., Dallas, TX), running back Nathan Kohrs (6-1, 207, Rsf., Belmont, CA) and inside linebacker Donovan Yarbough (6-2, 219, Jr., Annandale, VA) have decided to transfer and will not return to the team.
