CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 23, 1998
Boston College senior quarterback Scott Mutryn (6-3, 212, Middleburg Heights, OH) completed 13 of 22 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown Sunday at Alumni Stadium in BCs first controlled scrimmage since the team began practice on August 15. Senior running back Mike Cloud (5-11, 201, Portsmouth, RI) led all Eagles in rushing with 19 carries for 84 yards. Overall, the BC offense struck for 299 yards through the air and 287 yards on the ground in 24 offensive series.
"I saw some good things out there today," BC coach Tom OBrien said. "Were a much more physical team than we were a year ago. Were coming off eight straight days of two-a-days (practices), and it was a tough day out there. They hung in there, and today was a humid day. If the sun had been out, we would have had an Atlanta day.
"On the other hand, I dont think were as far along as we should be," he added. "Right now, were not getting the offensive and defensive execution we need to have to be a good team. We need to have better execution on both sides of the football. Were too inconsistent. If were not consistent, were not going to win."
Mutryn was named BCs starting QB by OBrien at BC Media Day on Aug. 14. His primary competition, sophomore Tim Hasselbeck (6-2, 211, Norfolk, MA), also had a big day, completing 8 of 14 passes for 133 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown bomb to redshirt freshman Kenney Gaskins (5-9, 167, Mitchellville, MD).
In addition to Cloud, BC junior Carlton Rowe (5-11, 200, Huntington ,NY) carried the ball 18 times for 72 yards, including one 33-yard scamper. Junior Quinton Lee (5-10, 195, Houston, TX) carried 13 times for 66 yards, while redshirt freshman Nathan Funk (5-11, 193, Vancouver, Canada) rushed 7 times for 36 yards.
Senior tight end Rob Tardio (6-5, 245, Wyckoff, NJ) led the Eagles in receiving with 5 catches for 75 yards, including the 21-yard touchdown pass from Mutryn. Redshirt freshman Kenney Gaskins (5-9, 167, Mitchellville, MD) caught two passes for 63 yards, including the 43-yard TD bomb from Hasselbeck.
BC was a perfect three-for-three in the field goal department. Junior John Matich (6-2, 203, San Diego, CA) connected on boots of 27 and 22 yards, while sophomore Mike Sutphin (6-3, 202, Ellicott City, MD) connected on a 29-yarder.
BCs will hold its final controlled scrimmage on Thursday (Aug. 27). The Eagles open the 1998 season at Georgia Tech on Saturday, Sept. 5.
