Eagles Rally For Ninth-Inning Win
June 21, 1999 | Baseball
BOSTON -- Junior second baseman Mike Gambino had three hits, sophomore right fielder Mike Quirk drove in three runs and freshman pitcher Erik Olson threw six strong innings of relief to lead Boston College to a 9-8 come-from-behind win over Northeastern in the consolation round of the 1998 Baseball Beanpot Tournament at Fenway Park.
Trailing 8-5 entering the final half inning, Boston College (13-18-1) registered four hits and four walks to gain the victory. With one out, senior center fielder Brendan Levesque walked. Freshman shortstop Mike Hubbard and Gambino followed with singles to load the bases. Freshman Jarett Mendoza ripped a pinch-hit RBI single to left to trim the Northeastern lead to 8-6. Quirk doubled to left field to tie the game. After NU intentionally walked junior catcher Jeff Waldron and brought in a relief pitcher, sophomore designated hitter Steve Langone drew a bases-loaded walk to score Mendoza with the winning run.
Northeastern (16-14-0) jumped on top early, scoring six runs on four hits in the first inning. BC scored one run in the bottom of the first and added three runs in the third to trim its deficit to 6-4. The Eagles pulled to within one on Quirk's RBI double in the sixth inning, before NU's Tim Daley hit a two-run homer in the seventh to give the Huskies a three-run cushion.
Olson gained the first win of his collegiate career, scattering six hits over six stanzas. He allowed one walk and fanned one batter.
GAME NOTES: Boston College plays at St. John's on Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26 ... Quirk, Hubbard and senior left fielder Chang Choe each had two hits.
