Waltham, Mass. -
Junior second baseman Mike Gambino registered three hits and two RBI and four other Eagles each had two hits to lead Boston College to a 9-8 non-league win over Brandeis.
Leading 2-1 after three innings, the Eagles scored five runs in the fourth inning and added single runs in the fifth and sixth frames to secure the victory. Brandeis added two runs in the fourth stanza, one run in the eighth and nearly tied the score with four runs in the bottom of the ninth.
BC used four hits, including a RBI single by Gambino, to score two runs in the second inning. In the fourth, the Eagles scored five runs on five hits. Sophomore designated hitter Steve Langone and sophomore right fielder Chris Rosado each reached on an error to begin the inning. Freshman center fielder Jarett Mendoza and Gambino followed with RBI singles to give BC a 4-1 advantage. After sophomore third baseman Joe Durkin advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, freshman shortstop Mike Hubbard delivered a RBI single, scoring Mendoza. Gambino scored on a passed ball, and Hubbard scored on junior catcher Jeff Waldron's single.
After Brandeis answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, Rosado hit a leadoff home run in the fifth to give BC an 8-3 lead. Senior left fielder Chang Choe scored BC's final run in the sixth inning, reaching base after being hit by a pitch and scored on a fielder's choice. BC produced the run without a hit.
After a solo homer in the eighth narrowed BC's margin to 9-4, the Judges used a two-run triple and a two-run home run to narrow the BC lead to one run with two outs in the final half-inning. Junior reliever Sean McGowan got the final out on a fly ball to center field.
Game Notes: Boston College turned two double plays ... Freshman pitcher Erik Olson made the start on the mound and gained his third collegiate win. In seven innings, he scattered six hits and allowed three runs (two earned runs).
