Baseball Falls to UMass at Beanpot

BOSTON, Mass. -- Right fielder Pete Gautreau registered three hits and three RBI to lead Massachusetts to a 7-2 win over Boston College in the opening round of the ninth annual Baseball Beanpot Tournament at Fenway Park.
Boston College was led by junior second baseman Mike Gambino and sophomore right fielder Mike Quirk, each of whom had two hits. Quirk also recorded two RBI.
The Minutemen scored two runs in the first inning to take the early lead, and extended their margin with four runs in the third stanza. Gautreau figured in both UMass rallies, singling in the second run of the game, and driving in two runs with a single in the fifth frame.
Boston College (11-18-1) narrowed the UMass lead to 6-2 with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Gambino led off the inning with a single, and senior third baseman David Bingham followed with a single. Quirk's double down the left-field line plated both runners.
Massachsetts (22-8-0) added one run on two hits in the seventh inning to close the scoring.
Scott Barnsby gained his second win of the season for Massachusetts, while sophomore Andy Sullivan suffered the loss on the mound for the Eagles.
GAME NOTES: Boston College plays at Providence on Wednesday, April 22 ... On Thursday, April 23, BC meets Northeastern in the consolation round of the Beanpot. Game time is 11 a.m. at Fenway Park.
