Chris Cheeks enters his second season as an assistant coach at Boston College.
Cheeks arrived at the Heights with 19 years of coaching experience at the Division I level. He spent the 2017-18 season as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky under head coach Rick Stansbury, after spending the previous four seasons at Delaware.
WKU finished 15-17 in 2017-18. Justin Johnson was named to the 2016-17 All-Conference USA Second Team and the NABC All-District Second Team after leading the Hilltoppers in both scoring (14.5) and rebounding (9.4). He also led Conference USA in both rebounding and double-doubles (14). Cheeks and the WKU staff also brought in the fifth-ranked recruiting class in the nation according to Rivals.
Delaware had one of their best seasons in 2013-14 with Cheeks on their staff. Delaware went 25-10, which was the second-most wins in program history, and won its first Colonial Athletic Association regular season title. UD won its fifth conference tournament championship and earned the No. 13 seed in the NCAA East Regional, falling to Michigan State, 93-78, in the second round of the tournament.
Cheeks was instrumental in the development of guard Devon Saddler, who set a school record and currently ranks sixth in CAA history with 2,222 points. He earned All-CAA honors in each of his four seasons at UD and was named to the 2014 Lou Henson Mid-Major All-America Team. Saddler was joined on the All-CAA First Team by Davon Usher, who set a Delaware single-season record by scoring 679 points during the 2013-14 season.
Delaware went 19-14 in Cheeks’ first season in Newark, finishing second in the CAA at 13-5. Both of those win totals were program bests since joining the conference. The Blue Hens advanced to the CAA Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2002-2003.
Cheeks mentored six different Blue Hens to All-CAA accolades in his time at Delaware, including Jamelle Hagins, who was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2013.
Cheeks served as the head coach of AAU team DC Assault in 2011-12 and was an assistant coach at Charlotte from 2006-10. He helped the 49ers attract the Atlantic 10’s top recruiting class and the 13th-ranked class in the country in 2007-08.
Prior to joining the 49ers, Cheeks spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Georgia State and was on staff at West Virginia from 2000-02. He helped recruit the top-rated class in the Big East in 2000. His coaching career began in 1995 at his alma mater, VCU. He served five years as an assistant coach with the Rams, helping them win the CAA regular season and conference tournament titles in 1996.
Cheeks scored 1,273 career points in two seasons at VCU from 1987-89 and his 42 points against Old Dominion in 1989 are the most ever by a Rams player in a Division I game. His 20.2 career scoring average ranks second in school history and he is a member of the Rams All-Time Team.
Cheeks and his wife, Mona, have three children: Christopher Jr., Brandon and Lauren.
