Eagles Defeat Panthers to Earn Midweek Sweep

MIAMI - Boston College Baseball (7-5) defeated FIU (7-7) on Tuesday night, 9-4, to earn the midweek sweep of the Panthers.
Jacob Burnham started for the Eagles and went four innings while striking out a career high seven batters as the BC pitching staff combined to match their season high of 15. Burnham gave way to Luke D'Ancona, Peter Schaefer, and Kyle Kipp, who combined for eight strikeouts and three earned runs.
The game started quickly as both pitchers made their way through their batters before the Eagles struck first in the top half of the third inning. Cesar Gonzalez and Julio Solier both earned walks and advanced to second and third before Ty Mainolfi launched a triple to center field, which scored both of them.
In the bottom half of the inning, FIU got one back after a groundout scored a runner from third.
Boston College didn't strike again till the top of the sixth, when they managed to get four more. Mainolfi got the Eagles' first run of the inning when he scored from third after an error by the Panthers' defense on a single by Jack Toomey. Toomey then stole second and scored when he was brought in on a RBI single by Colin Larson. Gonzalez made it 6-1 in favor of Boston College when he launched a double to right-center that brought in Ben Williams and Larson.
In the top of the seventh, the Eagles pushed their advantage to 9-1 on Gunnar Johnson's second homer of the season, which he launched to deep left center field to bring in Nick Wang and Mainolfi.
In the bottom of the seventh, FIU picked up three runs and had bases loaded for Kipp, who struck out two of the three batters he faced to get out of the inning.
Kipp then closed out the game as he pitched one hit ball over the next two innings while striking out four.
Up Next: The Eagles will return to action on Friday night in Miami, taking on the University of Miami at 7:00 p.m. for their ACC opener.
