Birdball Shuts Out Washington to End Weekend

PONCE, P.R. – Boston College Baseball (2-1) defeated Washington (0-3) on Sunday evening in the final game of the Puerto Rico Challenge, 10-0.
Tyler Mudd and Chase Hartsell combined for the four-hit shutout while striking out six over seven innings as they kept the Huskies scoreless.
The Eagles got the scoring started in the bottom of the first when Kyle Wolff drove in Ty Mainolfi from third, who had advanced on a wild pitch and a Jack Toomey single.
Boston College struck again an inning later when Julio Solier recorded his first career triple, which scored Gunnar Johnson and Colin Larson to put the Eagles up 3-0. Nick Wang made it 4-0 when his deep sac fly to center field scored Solier.
Boston College went quietly in the fourth, while at the top of the fifth, Mudd got out of a first and third jam when Washington hit a line drive to second baseman Sean Martinez to get the Eagles out of the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Boston College tacked on three more runs to make it 5-0. Wang went deep with a solo shot for his first and the team's first home run of the season. Mainolfi followed up the home run with a walk before Toomey launched a two-run home run, his first of the season, to make it 7-0 and bring in Mainolfi.
Hartsell came on in relief of Mudd in the sixth and, after walking his first batter, retired the side. The Eagles picked up another one in the bottom of the sixth when Mainolfi hit a sac fly to center field, which brought in Larson, extending the lead to 8-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, Boston College opened the inning with two quick outs before a pitch hit Gunnar Johnson, and Larson walked. The Eagles then executed a double steal, moving Johnson to third and Larson to second. Sean Martinez then walked off the game in the bottom of the seventh when his first hit of the season scored both Johnson and Larson.
Up Next: The Eagles will return to action on Friday in Spartanburg, SC when they take on Cornell at 4:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Park.
