Birdball Prepares to Open Season in Puerto Rico

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College baseball begins the 2026 season on the road, traveling to Puerto Rico to compete in the Puerto Rico Challenge.
The Eagles will take on Seton Hall, Houston, and Washington. Boston College will take on Seton Hall and Washington on Feb. 13 and 15 in the city of Ponce at the Estadio Francisco Montaner at 7:30 p.m. EST. The game against Houston will take place an hour away in Caguas at the Estadio Yldefonso Solá Morales on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1:00 p.m. EST.
Record vs the Field
This will be the first meeting in program history between the Cougars and Huskies, but it will be the 47th overall between the Pirates and the Cougars. The first 46 games came during the Eagles' time in the Big East. Seton Hall holds the series advantage 26-20, but Boston College has won four of the last five meetings.
Scouting the Weekend
Friday's matchup against the Pirates will feature A.J. Colarusso against Seton Hall's Steven Svenson, who is the Big East Preseason Pitcher of the Year. The Pirates finished 2025 going 24-30 (10-11 Big East). Magnus Krieger is Seton Hall's top returning hitter. The Pirates also return four of the top five most-used pitchers from 2025.
Saturday's matchup against Houston will feature Sean Hard facing the Cougars Kendall Hoffman. Saturday will mark Hard's first appearance since Mar. 17, 2024. He has missed the previous year and a half with an injury. Houston finished 2025 at 30-25 (12-17 in the Big 12). The Cougars return four of their top five hitters from a year ago, along with three of their top five most-used pitchers.
The Sunday night starters are to be determined. Washington finished 2025 at 29-28 (17-13 Big 10). The Huskies return three of their top five hitters from a year ago, along with three of their top five innings thrown.
New Faces
The Eagles welcomed 14 new players to campus this fall, six transfers and eight first years. The seven transfers are Sean Martinez, Ty Mainolfi, John D Mitchell, Carter Hendrickson, Aidan Gelbsman, Drew Grumbles, and Ethan Marzo. The first eight years are Gabe Malaret, Luke Gallo, Easton Masse, Chase Hartsell, Zach Fronio, Logan Berenson, Luke D'Ancona, and Sean Budis.
D1 Baseball Positional Rankings
D1 Baseball announced its preseason positional rankings, with the Eagles landing five. Ty Mainolfi was ranked 36th among the Top 50 third basemen. Carter Hendrickson was ranked 72nd among the Top 150 Outfielders in the country. A.J. Colarusso and Brady Miller were ranked 89th and 144th among the Top 200 Starting Pitchers. Gavin Soares was ranked 16th among the Top 100 Relief Pitchers.
Up Next
After three games in Puerto Rico, Boston College will travel to Spartanburg, SC, for four games at Fifth Third Park against Northwestern and Cornell. The Eagles will then return home for their season opener against Merrimack on Feb. 24.
