Gavin Soares struck out seven, earning the win with a career-best outing
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Baseball (23-25, 10-16 ACC) tied the series against Stanford (23-20, 8-18 ACC) in game two, winning 6-2 behind a gem of a relief outing from Gavin Soares on Saturday afternoon at Harrington Athletics Village.
Brady Miller started for the Eagles and hung a zero to open the game, facing just four batters in a scoreless top of the first. The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the second via a leadoff double and RBI single, but Miller halted the rally there. The lefty worked a scoreless third, logging his second and third strikeouts of the day to set the table for the Eagles in the bottom half. Adam Magpoc and Patrick Roche reached to lead off the frame, and after a sacrifice bunt moved them over, a ground ball from Gunnar Johnson brought both across, with Roche wheeling from second to score on a ball that never left the infield . The Eagles took a 2-1 lead into the fourth, but the visitors re-tied it in on a solo home run to left field, sending the game to the fifth tied at 2-2.
Gavin Soares relieved Brady Miller to begin the sixth in a 2-2 game. Miller finished with another strong weekend start, striking out five over five two-run innings, with no walks issued. Soares worked around a single and a walk, stranding two baserunners to preserve the tie in the sixth. Gunnar Johnson singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and Kyle Wolff followed by recording his 52nd career hit-by-pitch, setting a new Boston College program record and putting runners on first and second. With two outs, Vince Cimini drove it back up the middle for a one-run single, putting the Eagles in front, 3-2 in the sixth.
Soares stayed in for the seventh. Facing the top of the Stanford order, the freshman out of Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey threw an immaculate inning, striking out the side on just nine pitches, reaching a season-high 94 mph on his fastball and keeping the Eagles in front, 3-2.
With two outs in the seventh, Gunnar Johnson and Jack Toomey drew walks to put runners on first and second for Kyle Wolff. After setting the program's hit-by-pitch record in his last at-bat, Wolff made contact this time, smoking a two-run double down the left-field line to extend the Eagles' lead to 5-2. One batter later, and Esteban Garcia brought Wolff home, lifting his second hit of the day into shallow right-center to make it 6-2.
With a four-run lead, Gavin Soares stayed in the game for the eighth and hung another zero, completing his third scoreless inning of work and picking up his sixth strikeout, a new season-high for the freshman righty. Leading 6-2, Soares came back out for the ninth and closed the door, earning the win (3-0) on a career day, setting career-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts.
With the win, Boston College head coach Todd Interdonato recorded his 500th career win as a head coach, as the Eagles force a rubber match with Stanford on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 at Harrington Athletics Village.
