Quarterfinal Bound: Eagles Knock Off Virginia 12-8 to Advance in ACC Championship
May 22, 2025 | Baseball
Cesar Gonzalez struck out six over three shutout innings to seal the upset victory
After winning with five runs in ten innings on Tuesday, the Eagles matched that total in the opening frame of Wednesday's contest. The first two batters of the game reached, setting the table for a two-run double from Jack Toomey, who went 7-for-12 in the regular season series at Virginia. Gunnar Johnson singled, and Esteban Garcia reached, leading to the second two-RBI double of the inning, this time from Adam Magpoc, roping one down the left-field line, and the Eagles took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
The Cavaliers answered with a two-run homer in the ensuing frame, cutting the Eagles' lead to 5-2. The Eagles' starter Brady Miller halted the rally there, picking up his first strikeout of the night to strand a runner at second.
The Eagles worked the bases loaded and a wild pitch brought two more across in the second, sparked by a perfect dirt-ball read from Sam McNulty which forced a throwing error to bring the second runner home. Virginia responded with a two-spot of their own, sending the game to the third inning with the Eagles up 7-4. Kyle Kipp relieved Miller with one out in the third and a runner on second. Kipp picked up Miller, setting down two in a row, ending the frame with a strikeout to strand a runner at third.
Patrick Roche reached on a one-out double to the right-center gap in the fourth, and soon after swiped his third bag of the game, bringing the Eagles' total to seven stolen bases. Jack Toomey brought him home in the next at-bat, with a hard grounder forcing an E6 and allowing him to reach first, putting the Eagles up 8-4. Esteban Garcia made it a crooked number in the fourth, extending the lead to 9-4 on an RBI single through the right side, sending Virginia to the bullpen for the third time.
Kipp came back out for the fourth and retired the first batter he saw. After a one-out single, Vince Cimini spun a 4-3 double play after snagging a line drive to complete the 1-2-3 frame and preserve the five-run lead. The sophomore righty out of Stamford, Connecticut continued to deal through the fifth, setting down the 4-5-6 batters in Virginia's lineup in order, sending the game to the sixth with the Eagles leading 9-4.
The Cavaliers made it a one-run game in the sixth, working the bases loaded and logging a fielder's choice RBI and a three-run home run to cut the Eagles' lead to 9-8 after six. Cesar Gonzalez entered in relief to begin the seventh and preserved the lead. The freshman pitcher-catcher hybrid out of Venezuela began the frame with a strikeout, and after a one-out single, he responded with his second K and a fly ball to keep the Eagles in front, 9-8 after seven full.
The Eagles put runners at the corners to begin the eighth, and Josiah Ragsdale delivered with insurance. The junior out of Vineland, New Jersey stayed with a slider tailing out of the zone and drove it down the left-field line, scoring two on a double and advancing to third on the throw home. A few pitches later, and Ragsdale made it 12-8 by scoring on a wild pitch. Gonzalez came back out for the bottom of the eighth and delivered. In his second inning of work, he worked around a pair of singles, striking out two to strand two and send it to the ninth with the Eagles up by four.
Similar to Gavin Soares in round one, the freshman reliever finished what he started. Cesar Gonzalez took the mound for the bottom of the ninth and retired the side in order, picking up his fifth and sixth strikeouts to seal the 12-8 Eagles victory and send Boston College to the ACC Championship Quarterfinals.
The Eagles will face North Carolina on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
