2025 Birdball Season Concludes in ACC Quarterfinals vs. No. 3 UNC

BC starter A.J. Colarusso delivered gutsy outing on short rest in season finale
DURHAM, N.C. — Boston College Baseball (28-29, 13-20 ACC) fell 7-2 to No. 3 North Carolina (40-12, 19-11 ACC) in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2025 ACC Championship on Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
A.J. Colarusso got the ball to start the game for the Eagles, and the Boston College ace struck out back-to-back batters to erase a UNC single to end the first inning. The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the third, sparked by a two-out single from Josiah Ragsdale, his second base hit in as many at-bats. Patrick Roche picked him up, roping an RBI double off the wall in left-field, and came around to score on a single from Jack Toomey, putting the Eagles in front, 2-0 halfway though the third.
Coming back out for the bottom of the third with a two-run lead, Colarusso began the frame with a three-pitch strikeout. After opening the scoring, Patrick Roche robbed extra bases with a full-extension web gem at third base, retiring North Carolina's leadoff batter and completing the 1-2-3 inning. The Eagles' starter faced some traffic on the basepaths in the fourth, but A.J. Colarusso hung in there and responded by punching out his fourth batter of the night and inducing a soft flyout to preserve the 2-0 advantage through four full.
Colarusso was not done.
The junior lefty out of Leominster, Massachusetts struck out the first two batters of the fifth, but the Tar Heels worked the bases loaded, bringing the Carolina-heavy crowd at Durham Bulls Athletic Park to their feet. In a full count against North Carolina's home-run leader in Luke Stevenson, Colarusso painted the top right corner of the zone, picking up his seventh strikeout to strand the bases loaded and send the game to the sixth with the Eagles up by two.
The Eagles' starter wasn't finished after five, either. After starting Tuesday's opening round, A.J. Colarusso took the mound for the sixth and continued his heroic performance. The ace fanned his eighth batter of the night to open the frame, and after a one-out double, responded with his ninth strikeout and a grounder to shortstop to cap off six remarkable shutout innings.
Colarusso exited in the seventh, and North Carolina answered the change by working the bases loaded, tying the game at 2-2 on a double down the right field line. The Tar Heels plated three more, taking a 5-2 lead after seven full. The third-ranked Tar Heels added a pair on a two-run home run in the eighth, and their pitching held through the ninth, ending the game 7-2.
The Eagles' 2025 season concludes after a pair of upset victories over Notre Dame and Virginia in the 2025 ACC Championship.
