Eagles' pitching tosses six shutout innings to close out game three victory
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Baseball (17-18, 7-11 ACC) walked off Notre Dame (16-17, 4-14 ACC) to win the series in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first, Notre Dame opened the scoring in the second on a pair of RBI singles to go up 2-0. Colin Larson cut the deficit in half to leadoff the bottom of the second, driving his first home run of the season over the left-field fence. The visitors made it 3-1 after a double and a single in the third, but John Kwiatkowski came on in relief and logged two straight strikeouts to strand runners at second and third to end the frame and halt the rally.
Gavin Soares took over pitching duties in the fourth and hung a zero to keep it a two-run game after four full. Vince Cimini roped a triple to right field to lead off the fifth, and Esteban Garcia picked him up with a pinch-hit RBI double to right-center to bring one back and make it 3-2 after five full. Brady Miller entered in the fifth and logged three straight shutout innings, setting the table for the Eagles to tie it in the sixth. With two outs, Sam McNulty singled, and Cimini added to his big day with an RBI double to left-center to draw even at 3-3 after six.
Eric Schroeder relieved Miller in the eighth and finished off another scoreless frame. Tied at 3-3 going into the ninth, Schroeder continued his shutout effort with two strikeouts to send it to the final frame. McNulty led it off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. With one out, Gunnar Johnson entered as a pinch hitter. Johnson wasted no time, driving the first pitch he saw deep to right-center, walking off a 4-3 win for the Eagles, and a 2-1 series win over Notre Dame.
Winners of four of their last five, the Eagles will turn to a Tuesday home game against Connecticut before a road conference series at Wake Forest starting Thursday night.
