March 07, 2025 | Baseball
Josiah Ragsdale hit first HR of the year to tie the game in the eighth inning
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Boston College Baseball (5-5, 1-0 ACC) stormed back to beat the No. 9 Virginia Cavaliers (8-4, 0-1 ACC) in the conference opener, scoring five runs in the eighth inning to win on Friday night.
The Eagles opened the scoring in second inning after Nick Wang led off the frame with a double to right-center. Wang stole third, and Jack Toomey made it 1-0 with a hard-hit opposite field single past the first baseman.
The Cavaliers responded with two in the bottom of the third to go ahead 2-1. The hosts added two more in the fourth on a two-run shot to center field, making it a 4-1 game.
Josiah Ragsdale reached on a catcher's interference in the 6th and advanced to third on a Kyle Wolff single. That set the table for Patrick Roche, who made it a 4-2 game with a sacrifice fly to right field. A.J. Colarusso relieved Gavin Soares in the bottom of the sixth and stranded two runners to keep it a two-run game. Colarusso came back out for the seventh and put up a zero, keeping the Eagles within striking distance.Â
Everything shifted in the eighth inning.
Sam McNulty led off the frame with a single through the left side, and one batter later, Josiah Ragsdale tied the ballgame with a two-run shot to left field, his first home run of the year to make it a 4-4 game.
After entering the game for Nick Wang at first base, Esteban Garcia roped a double down the right field line to put runners at second and third with one out. Adam Magpoc was intentionally walked, and Vince Cimini put the Eagles back in front with a two-run single through the left side, extending his hit-streak to nine games in the process. Jack Toomey continued the rally, sending a high chopper over the third baseman's head to push the lead to 7-4 capping off a five-run eighth inning for the Eagles.
A.J. Colarusso came back out for the bottom of the frame and continued to shove. Colarusso silenced the Cavaliers over the final 3.1 innings, putting up four straight zeroes, allowing just three hits, while striking out two with zero walks issued. He shut the door in the final frame, earning the win (1-1). Ryan Osinski was issued the loss for Virginia (0-2).
