Roche's three-run home run sets stage for series rubber match on Sunday at 1:00
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Baseball (10-10, 3-5 ACC) took down No. 17 North Carolina (17-6, 3-5 ACC), winning 3-2 in game two to even the series on Saturday afternoon.
The Tar Heels opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third, but Eagles' starter Tyler Mudd kept the visitors in check otherwise, tossing 4.1 innings of one-hit, one-run ball, striking out two in the process. Kyle Kipp relieved Mudd in the fifth, and induced an inning-ending double-play ball to keep it a one-run game and escape traffic on the basepaths. In the bottom half, Sam McNulty and Josiah Ragsdale reached on one-out singles, and Patrick Roche took advantage, launching his second homer of the year deep to left field, a three-run shot to put the Eagles up 3-1 after five full.
Kipp came back out for the sixth and did his job, working a scoreless frame, finishing his day after 1.2 shutout innings with just one hit allowed. Joey Ryan took over on the mound, setting down the Tar Heels in order in the seventh, punching out the final two batters of the inning.
The Eagles took a 3-1 lead into the eighth inning. Joey Ryan retired the first two batters he saw, but UNC brought a run across after three straight singles. With two outs and a one-run lead, Ryan came up with a critical strikeout, his fourth in two innings to keep BC in front 3-2. Ryan came back out for the ninth and closed the door, logging his fifth strikeout in three innings and picking up his fourth save of the season in the series-tying win. Kyle Kipp earned the win for the Eagles (1-1), while Jason DeCaro took the loss for UNC (3-2).Â
Boston College and North Carolina will play in the series' rubber match at 1:00 on Sunday at Harrington Athletics Village.
