Hand Earns Second ACC Player of the Week Award
February 03, 2025 | Men's Basketball
Sophomore guard becomes the first BC player in 15 years to win the ACC's weekly award twice in the same season
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- For the second time this season, Boston College's Donald Hand Jr. has been named ACC Player of the Week.
Hand becomes the first Boston College player to garner weekly conference honors twice since Jerome Robinson did so in 2016-17 and 2017-18 - and the first Eagle win the award twice in the same season since Reggie Jackson during the 2010-11 campaign.
The 6-6 guard poured in a career-high 31 points to go along with nine rebounds in a thrilling 77-76 comeback win over Florida State on Feb. 1. Â Hand connected on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor in 38 minutes of action. Â He drilled a career-best six 3-pointers and made all nine of his attempts from the charity stripe, helping the Eagles erase a 15-point second half deficit en route to victory.
The 31-point performance was the highest single-game scoring output by an ACC player this past week (Jan. 27-Feb. 2) and it marked only the fourth occasion where an ACC player tallied at least 31 points and nine boards in a single game in 2024-25.
Hand leads BC in both scoring (15.5) and rebounding (6.7) and is one of three players to rank among the top 15 in both statistical categories, joining Stanford's Maxime Raynaud and Duke's Cooper Flagg. Â Hand shares this week's ACC award with Duke's Flagg.
The Virginia Beach, Va. product also ranks first in the ACC in free throw percentage (.908) and is among the league leaders in 3-pointers made, ranking eighth at 2.14 3FG per game.
Earlier this season on Dec. 30, history was made as Hand and his father became the first father-son duo to each earn ACC Player of the Week honors in their respective careers. Donald Hand Sr. was the recipient of the ACC's top weekly player award on Jan. 31, 2000 while starring at Virginia. Â The conference began its weekly awards program during the 1972-73 season.
Since BC joined the ACC prior to the 2005-06 season, an Eagle has been selected ACC Player of the Week on 19 occasions, with 10 different players having captured the award at least once.
