Furious Comeback Propels Eagles to Win Over Florida State

BC posts second double-digit comeback of the season; Donald Hand Jr. poured in a career-high 31 points
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Chas Kelley III's 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds left capped a furious Boston College comeback, downing Florida State, 77-76 on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing by eight with less than a minute left in regulation, BC used a 15-6 push - including five points in the final four seconds - a tip-in from Chad Venning and a steal and the eventual game winning trey from Kelley.
Donald Hand Jr. poured in a career-high 31 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds. Â Fred Payne added 14 - nine coming in the second half and five during the furious comeback with under 40 seconds to play.
The Eagles trailed by as many as 15 points - 58-44 - with 12:40 remaining and outscored the Seminoles, 33-18 down the stretch to garner the win. Â BC held FSU without a field goal for nearly a 10-minute stretch in the second half, but the Seminoles stayed in it thanks to a steady stream of trips to the free throw line. Â For the game, FSU connected on 30-of-39 from the charity stripe, including 18-of-24 in the second half. Â For the game, BC was 18-of-22.

FIRST HALF
- BC led for much of the first six minutes of play, before a 9-0 FSU run gave the Seminoles a 19-14 led with 12:16 left in the half
- A Donald Hand Jr. 3-pointer with 11:22 to go in the period cut it to two - 21-19 , but FSU would tally the next six points
- FSU would lead by as many as eight, after a 3-pointer with 9:34 left made it 27-19
- Hand's fourth 3-pointer of the half got the Eagles within three - 36-33 - with 2:37 left but FSU would respond with five straight.
- A Fred Payne 3-pointer with seven ticks left made it a 41-36 score at the break
- FSU built a nine-point lead less than five minutes into the second half, as the Eagles were 1-for-6 from the floor during that opening stretch
- After a Joshua Beadle 3-pointer cut it to six - 48-42 - with 15:17 to go, FSU opened up a double digit lead thanks to an 11-2 run over the next 2:37, extending its lead to 15
- Boston College held without a FG for nearly 10 minutes during the second half. Â But FSU was able to maintain its lead by making 10 trips to the charity stripe during that stretch, making seven
- FSU led by eight - 70-62 - before the final minute of mayhem began.
- Hand cut it to five - 70-65 - after a traditional three-point play with 48 ticks left
- After two more FSU free throws, Kelley was fouled but missed the front-end of a 1-and-1 with 39 seconds to go. Â Payne corralled the offensive board and was fouled, making both free throws.
- Down 72-67 with 37 seconds left, Payne logged another steal and called timeout. Â
- On the ensuing play, Hand was fouled and made his two from the line, making it 72-69 with 30 seconds left.
- BC fouled on the inbounds and FSU made their two free throws, pushing it back to a two-possession game - 74-69 - with 28 seconds to play
- Payne fought for an offensive board off a missed 3-pointer and converted it into an and-one, making it a two-point game - 74-72 - with 15 seconds remainingÂ
- Two more Seminoles' free throws put it back to a two-possession game - 76-72 - but the Eagles would not be denied
- Payne's layup with eight seconds left was blocked but Venning tipped it back in to make it 76-74 with seven ticks to go
- Kelley stole the inbound pass by the coaches' box hash mark and pulled up from 25 feet in rhythm, giving BC its first lead since 14-12 with 13:45 left in the first half
- This marks the second double-digit comeback win in ACC play. Â On Jan. 1, BC erased a 19-point first half hole against Miami. Â The Eagles erased a 15-point deficit in the second half on the afternoon
- Donald Hand Jr.'s 31 points was a career-high
- Boston College drilled 11 3-pointers, connecting from long-range at a 40.7% clip
- Joshua Beadle dished out five assists to one turnover in 27 minutes. Â Over his last four games, he has dropped 20 dimes with only seven mishaps
- Each of the last four meetings with Florida State has been decided by single-digits; two by one-point
- Boston College returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 5 when it hosts Louisville
