BC comes up short in close outing
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College football fell to No. 12 Notre Dame, 25-10, on Saturday evening in front of a sold out crowd of 44,500 fans at Alumni Stadium. It was a defensive battle as the score was just 12-10 until the final seconds of the third quarter before the Fighting Irish pulled away.
Â
Grayson James finished 25-for-37 with 240 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Lewis Bond hauled in eight catches for 92 yards and Jaedn Skeete also caught eight passes for 73 yards. Jeremiah Franklin had seven catches for 46 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Omar Thornton led the Eagles with nine total tackles and a forced fumble. Quintayvious Hutchins recorded six tackles with one QB hurry.
Â
The Boston College defense came out strong, forcing a punt and a turnover on downs on Notre Dame's first two drives of the day.
Â
The Fighting Irish opened the scoring on the first play of the second quarter as CJ Carr found Malachi Fields over the middle for a 40-yard touchdown, but Notre Dame missed the extra point, making it a 6-0 game.
Â
The Eagles forced their first turnover of the afternoon later in the quarter. Notre Dame drove down to the BC 3-yard line, but Omar Thornton forced a fumble on a rush by Jadarian Price that was recovered by Favor Bate.
Â
After Notre Dame added to their lead with a touchdown and failed two-point conversion, Boston College marched down the field and scored their first touchdown of the game when James tossed a 25-yard pass to Reed Harris in the back of the endzone. James had four completions that were 15+ yards on the drive, with two going to Bond and one to Skeete.
Â
The Eagles started the second half with a 21-play, 74-yard drive that lasted 11:20 and capped it off with a 25-yard field goal from Luca Lombardo that cut the deficit to two.
Â
The Fighting Irish tallied another touchdown late in the third quarter when Jeremiyah Love scored from three yards out, but a missed extra point kept it at a one-score game.
Â
Just as Boston College was driving down the field to potentially score to tie the game, an interception from the Notre Dame defense ended the drive deep in their own territory. The Fighting Irish scored on the first play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive as Love rushed for 94 yards and the touchdown.
