Eagles Sweep Stags to Kick-off Fairfield Invitational

FAIRFIELD, Conn.-- The Boston College volleyball team kicked off the Fairfield Invitational Friday night, topping Fairfield University in three sets. The win marked the Eagles fourth straight victory and the first win against the Stags since 2013.
BC hit a .317 clip as a team, led by senior Cornelia Roach's error-free .578 with four kills. Sophomore Audrey Ross set the offensive pace with 12 kills for the Eagles while sophomore Halle Schroder followed behind with 11 kills and four aces.
Julia Haggerty was credited with two solo blocks, while Ross and Roach each tallied one. Sophomore Brooklyn Yelland put up a match-high and career-record 16 digs while Schroder put up 8.
HOW IT HAPPENED…
Set 1- The teams opened up the match evenly, trading off to find a 3-3 score before the Stags captured a 12-7 lead. The Eagles answered back with a 5-2 run, causing a Fairfield timeout. The Stags tied the set five more times but it wasn't enough to stop the Eagles 5-0 run, as BC earned the first set, 25-21.
Set 2- The Eagles pushed for the first lead of the set, 3-0. The Stags responded, then both teams traded off finding their way to a 8-7 Eagle lead. The teams switched off leads until a 22-22, Yelland ace, set the Eagles up for a 4-1 run, Herrington tallied the final kill to take the set 25-23.
Set 3- The teams traded points to open the third set, with BC finding the first three-point lead at 12-9. Fairfield rallied, tying the match four times, BC held off the Stags attack regaining the lead, 22-21 off of a Schroder ace. A Ross kill won the match with a 25-23 set score.

The Eagles look to continue their momentum as they take on Central Conn. State and Binghamton tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
