West becomes 93rd Eagle to hear name called
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Boston College pitcher John West with the 374th pick in the 12th round of the 2024 MLB Draft on Tuesday afternoon, becoming the 93rd player in program history to reach the next level of baseball.
After solidifying himself in the weekend rotation his junior year, John West (Shrewsbury, Mass.) emerged as the ace of the 2024 Eagles' pitching staff, starting a team-high 14 games with a team-low ERA among starting pitchers. West tallied five or more strikeouts in eight of his 14 starts, logging a team-high 66 punchouts in his senior campaign. In 2024, West led all BC starters in ERA, WHIP, innings pitched, strikeouts, and batting average against. West's 14 starts as a senior rank 7th all-time for most single-season starts by a Boston College pitcher. The Shrewsbury, Mass native earned Third-Team All-ACC honors in his final season as an Eagle, after ranking top-20 in the ACC in ERA and strikeouts, and top-five in starts, innings pitched, and home runs per game. West is the fourth Eagle to get drafted by the Diamondbacks, and the first since Jacob Stevens in 2018.
Excluding the COVID-shortened 2020 MLB Draft, this marks the 10th straight year Boston College Baseball has produced at least one MLB Draft pick, with Cameron Leary (Athletics) and West following the 2023 Birdball draft class of Travis Honeyman (Cardinals) and Joe Vetrano (Dodgers).
