Series Tied: Cameron Leary Walks Off No. 14 FSU in Extras
April 06, 2024 | Baseball
Eagles pick up single-game upset with rubber match set for Sunday at 12 p.m.
After Eric Schroeder (Ridgewood, N.J.) put up his third straight scoreless inning of relief, the Eagles sent the top of their lineup to the plate in the bottom of the eleventh with the game and series on the line. With one down, Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.) stepped into the batters box, one day after hitting his tenth home run of the season in the series opener. Having been pitched around all day, Leary found a pitch he liked on a 2-2 count, driving his eleventh long-ball of the season 448 feet over the right field fence, a towering walk-off to even weekend series with one swing.
The Eagles and Seminoles traded runs in the second inning, with Nick Wang (Newton, Mass.) leading off the home half with a triple to left field. A batter later, and Vince Cimini (Scranton, Pa.) tied the game with an RBI single right back up the middle.
FSU and BC traded runs again in the third and fourth, with John Collins (New York, N.Y.) tying the game at two with an RBI groundout after Parker Landwehr (Baltimore, Md.) and Cam Caraher (Plymouth, N.Y.) led off the frame with doubles.
The Eagles jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the sixth, with the rally started by leadoff singles from Nick Wang and Vince Cimini. Parker Landwehr walked to load the bases, and Wang and Cimini both came around to score on consecutive wild pitches. John Collins added his second RBI of the day, with a sacrifice fly bringing home Landwehr and capping the three-run inning.
The Seminoles struck for two in the seventh on a two-run home run, but the Eagles got one back in their half of the inning, with Adam Magpoc (Torrance, Ca.) drawing a leadoff walk and coming around to score on a fielder's choice. Florida State tied the game in the eighth, and the game went to the ninth tied at 6-6.
John West (Shrewsbury, Mass.) started the game for BC and set the Eagles up for success, tossing seven innings with six strikeouts and four runs, not factoring into the decision. Eric Schroeder relieved West after seven innings, and after a shaky eighth, really settled in, slowing down the game and allowing BC to take advantage of three straight shutout frames.
Schroeder earned the win for the Eagles (1-1), with John Abraham picking up the loss for the Seminoles (1-1).
The Eagles will face the Seminoles in the series-deciding game three on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
