Late Rally Falls Short Against the River Hawks

Eagles open three-game set at home with Louisville this Thursday at 7:00
The River Hawks jumped out for four in the opening frame, but the Eagles' offense wasn't quiet for long. In the bottom of the second, Sam McNulty (Cambridge, Mass.) cut the deficit in half with a two-out, two-run single to right field with the bases loaded.
Kyle Kipp (Stamford, Ct.) relieved Brian McMonagle after an inning and turned in a strong two frames, striking out four and allowing just one hit and one run. The visitors added one on a sacrifice fly in the third to make it 5-2. Jordan Fisse (Ridgewood, N.J.) took over in the fourth and delivered two shutout frames of relief, striking out two, walking none, and allowing just one hit over two innings.
The sides traded runs in the fifth and the sixth, with the Eagles adding one via a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.), which was carrying over the right-center fence before being pulled back for an out by the center-fielder. The River Hawks added one in the 8th, and the Eagles responded with a three-spot, to bring themselves within one heading into the ninth. Vince Cimini (Scranton, Pa.) began with an RBI single, and later came around on a double steal, swiping home.
The River Hawks hung on to win 7-6 after a scoreless ninth. McMonagle was charged with the loss (3-1). Frankie Venezia earned the win (2-1), with Zach Fortuna picking up the save for UMass Lowell (1).Â
The Eagles will host Louisville for a three-game conference series this Thursday-Saturday, with game one scheduled for Thursday at 7:00.
