Second Half Surge Drives BC Past Notre Dame

Jaeden Zackery leads the way for the Eagles with 20 points
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College defeated Notre Dame, 63-59, on Monday night at Conte Forum. The Eagles improved to 11-6 on the season and 2-4 in ACC play. Junior Jaeden Zackery led the way for the Eagles, finishing with 20 points and tying a career-high eight made field goals. Graduate student Quinten Post tacked on 17 points. Post connected on three clutch three-point baskets in the final five minutes of the game, giving the Eagles a late cushion. In tonight's win, Head Coach Earl Grant earned his 40th win at Boston College and his 166th win as a collegiate head coach.
FIRST HALF:
● Devin McGlockton entered the scoring column first for the Eagles with a corner triple at the 17:36 mark. The Eagles missed six of their first seven shots from the floor.
● With 12 minutes left in the half, Mason Madsen scored on back-to-back possessions to put the Eagles ahead. Notre Dame answered with a 6-0 scoring run. BC trailed 16-12.
● The Eagles had a hot start from three-point territory, knocking down three of their first five attempts.
● At the 3:34 mark, the Fighting Irish completed a 15-2 run. The Eagles were held scoreless for over three minutes during Notre Dame's offensive surge. Notre Dame gained a double-digit lead, 31-19.
● Madsen buried a three-pointer as time expired in the first half.
● The Fighting Irish led by seven at halftime, 36-29.
● Zackery (12 points) and Notre Dame's Markus Burton (15 points) each notched double figures before halftime.
● Boston College shot 10-30 (33.3%) from the field, 4-8 (50.0%) from three-point range and 5-5 (100%) from the free throw line in the first half.
● Notre Dame shot 14-27 (51.9%) from the field, 6-12 (50.0%) from three-point range and 2-6 (33.3%) from the free throw line in the first half.
SECOND HALF:
● The Eagles opened the second half on an 8-0 run to regain the lead. Notre Dame did not score for nearly four minutes to start the half.
● There were seven lead changes within the first eight minutes of the half, with the teams repeatedly trading baskets.
● Midway through the half, Notre Dame went another four minutes without scoring, allowing BC to build a five-point lead (47-42).
● With five minutes remaining, Post knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key to halt a Notre Dame run. Post added another triple at the 3:39 mark, capping off an eight-point eruption for the Eagles. BC led 57-55.
● The game was knotted at 57 heading into the final minute of action. Neither team had scored in over two minutes.
● At the 0:47 mark, Post drained yet another timely three-pointer to put the Eagles back on top. Notre Dame missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer with 0:11 left.
● Boston College shot 11-26 (42.3%) from the field, 3-10 (30.0%) from three-point range and 9-13 (69.2%) from the free throw line in the second half.
● Notre Dame shot 7-24 (29.2%) from the field, 2-8 (25.0%) from three-point range and 7-9 (77.8%) from the free throw line in the second half.
HIGHLIGHTS:
● Boston College finished 21-56 (37.5%) from the field, 7-18 (38.9%) from three-point range and 14-18 (77.8%) from the free throw line.
● Notre Dame finished 7-24 (29.2%) from the field, 2-8 (25.0%) from three-point range and 7-9 (77.8%) from the free throw line.
● Zackery (20) and Post (17) were the only two players to finish in double figures for the Eagles.
● Zackery tied his career high in made field goals, connecting on eight shots in a game for the fourth time this season.
● McGlockton, second on the team in rebounding, finished with a team-high eight boards.
● Markus Burton finished with a team-high 19 points for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame's Carey Booth had a game-high 13 rebounds. Three Notre Dame players finished with 10+ boards.
● Notre Dame out-rebounded the Eagles by 16, a margin of 44-28.
● There were 17 lead changes in the game.
NOTES:
● Boston College is 16-27 all-time versus Notre Dame, including an 11-11 mark at home and 6-15 mark in ACC play.
● The Eagles have now won three consecutive games versus Notre Dame for the first time in 27 years, as well as four consecutive home matchups.
● BC improved to 7-2 at home, 2-3 in January, 9-2 in night games and 8-4 in weekday games.
● Boston College is 11-10 overall and 4-1 in ACC play all-time in games played on January 15.
● McGlockton finished with a game-high two blocks. Boston College is 20- when he blocks at least one shot and 10-2 when he blocks at least two shots.
● The Eagles are now 5-5 when trailing at halftime and 2-1 in games decided by five points or less this season.
● Notre Dame's 59 points are the fewest allowed by Boston College in a game this season.
● Coach Grant earned his 40th win at Boston College and his 166th win as a collegiate head coach.
WHAT'S NEXT:
● The Eagles will remain home and take on the No. 4/3 North Carolina Tar Heels (13-3, 5-0 ACC) on Saturday, Jan. 20. Tip-off is set for 2:15 p.m. at Conte Forum. The game will be
televised on The CW.
● North Carolina holds a 22-6 overall advantage over the Eagles. The Tar Heels won both matchups last season, including an 85-61 triumph in the Second Round of the ACC Tournament.
● Boston College holds a 70-260 all-time record versus ranked opponents. The team's last win over a top-five opponent came on Dec. 9, 2017, when the Eagles upset then-No. 1/1 Duke at home, 89-84.
