Eagles Open 2023 Fall Slate at Red Bandanna Invitational
September 03, 2023 | Men's Golf
The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at Turning Stone's Kaluyhat Course in Verona, N.Y.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Boston College men's golf team opens its 2023 fall slate on Sunday, Sept. 3 at the inaugural Red Bandanna Invitational. Â The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at Turning Stone's Kaluyhat Course in Verona, N.Y.
In its first year, the men's collegiate golf tournament was named the Red Bandanna Invitational in honor of Welles Crowther '99 - "The Man in the Red Bandanna."  Crowther, who died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, was an equities trader with Sandler O'Neill on the 104th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. A volunteer firefighter in Nyack, N.Y., Crowther spearheaded a rescue effort from the Sky Lobby on the 78th floor and is credited with saving more than a dozen lives. Survivors recalled being saved by a man wearing a Red Bandanna.  Crowther had worn a Red Bandanna, given to him by his father, Jefferson, since he was a child growing up in Nyack, N.Y.  He carried it wherever he went and, while a student-athlete at BC, he always wore one beneath his lacrosse uniform.
The first and second rounds will be played in continuous format on Sunday, Sept. 3, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Â BC will be paired with West Virginia and Delaware for the opening two rounds. Â Monday's final 18 holes of play will also go off in shotgun format at 8 a.m.
Measuring in at just over 7,100 yards, the Kaluhyat Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and was ranked one of the Top 100 Best Casino Courses by Golfweek in 2015. Kaluhyat - the Oneida word for 'the other side of the sky' - is marked by dramatic changes in elevation, measuring as high as 50 feet in some areas, with plateau settings offering seemingly endless, spectacular views of the surrounding terrain. Six lakes throughout the course add to the picturesque setting. Kaluhyat is a classic shot-maker's course, where accuracy and strategy are rewarded as much as length.
