Kara Heck Scores Game-Winner With 2:40 Left in Fourth Quarter
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 14 Boston College (4-2, 1-0) claimed an upset victory over no. 6 Virginia (5-2, 0-1) on Friday, winning 2-1 in a thriller down the stretch.
Graduate student Margo Carlin continued her strong 2023 campaign, breaking the ice with a goal from a setup by Madelieve Drion with under nine seconds left in the first quarter. Drion would record her first point and assist of her collegiate career on the play. Virginia answered in the second quarter, tying the game at 1-1 with 10:24 left in the half. The Eagles went into the break controlling the pace overall, with all eight of their shots on goal and surrendering only one shot on goal to the Cavaliers.
The second half became a battle between two of the top defenses in the nation, with only one shot on goal being logged across both teams throughout the third quarter. Senior Kara Heck would break the stalemate in the final quarter of play, netting the game-winning goal off a beautiful offensive set from Carlin and Klara Mueffelmann for her first of the season with 2:40 left in regulation. Mueffelmann's setup was her first assist and point of her career. Virginia earned their last opportunity at an equalizer in the form of a penalty corner with 1:22 left in the game, but the Eagles' stout defensive efforts allowed them to close out the victory.
Boston College will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on James Madison University on Sunday at noon. Action will be streamed live on ESPN+.
