Eagles and Panthers Linked Ahead of Stanley Cup Final
June 02, 2023 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The 2023 Stanley Cup Final begins on Saturday in Las Vegas and numerous player and front office connections link Boston College with the Eastern Conference champion Florida Panthers.
Â
Four former Eagles – forwards Colin White and Patrick Giles, defenseman Casey Fitzgerald, and goaltender Spencer Knight – are represented on Florida's roster along with assistant general manager Brett Peterson, who won a national championship on the Heights in 2001.
Â
In his first season with the Panthers, White skated in 68 games during the regular season with eight goals and seven assists for 15 points. He has played in all 16 playoff games with a pair of assists, including one in the clinching Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final against Carolina.
Â
Fitzgerald moved to Florida from Buffalo in January and made his NHL postseason debut in Game 4 of the First Round series against the Bruins on April 23. The former BC captain suited up for 23 regular season games with the Sabres before playing four more in Florida.
Â
Knight is in his third NHL season with the Panthers, going 9-8-0 in net this year in 19 starts. Last year in his first full NHL campaign, he registered 19 wins to set a record by a Panthers rookie goalie in 2021-22.
Â
Giles was added to the Panthers' roster from the AHL's Charlotte Checkers on May 7 in advance of the playoffs. The forward played in 72 games with 13 points in his first full AHL season.
Boston College ranks second in NCAA history behind only Wisconsin with 21 names on the Stanley Cup, most recently adding Alex Newhook last year with Colorado.
