Vetrano Hammers BC Past No. 2 Wake Forest in Extras
May 06, 2023 | Baseball
First baseman homers twice as Eagles go deep six times.
Â
The BC bullpen surrendered leads in the sixth and eighth innings, but the Eagles climbed back into it with the long ball on each occasion. Freshman left fielder Cohl Mercado (Ocean View, N.J.) hit his first career home run, a three-run, game-tying shot in the seventh. Vetrano's first homer came in the eighth and put BC ahead, but in the top of the ninth and down by three it was graduate catcher Peter Burns (Reading, Mass.) that tied the game with a three-run home run.
Â
Junior right-hander John West (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took the ball for the bottom of the ninth and stranded a leadoff-walk at second base. It was the only baserunner West (3-3) faced as he finished the game by retiring 12 Demon Deacons in a row as he racked up four strikeouts.
Â
In the start, graduate RHP Chris Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.) shoved for five shutout innings. He struck out three and scattered two hits and a walk. For Wake Forest, lefty Sean Sullivan went six innings with two runs against on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. RHP Cole Roland (1-1) got the loss in 1.2 inning with two runs against on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Â
The Eagles also got home run from senior center fielder Barry Walsh (Sterling, Mass.) and an insurance run in the 12th from freshman designated hitter Kyle Wolff (Andover, Mass.). Vetrano finished the day 3-for-6.
