BC Athletics Celebrates at 2023 Golden Eagles

Annual Athletics awards show celebrated the top performances and moments from the 2022-23 academic year
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — The annual Golden Eagles Awards Show was held on Friday, May 5 in Conte Forum, celebrating the top performances and moments from the 2022-23 academic year. Hosted by former women's basketball standout Ayla Brown '10, the Golden Eagles recognized the best of the best in the community, the classroom, and in competition over the past year in Boston College Athletics.
The night was highlighted by the presentation of the Eagle of the Year Awards - Stefan Sigurdarson from men's soccer and Katherine Mitchell from women's track & field and cross country. Presented annually to the most outstanding male and female student-athletes, the Eagle of the Year Awards are selected using the following criteria:
•   Documented achievement in their respective sport
•   National or conference accomplishments and recognition
•   Leadership ability
•   Involvement in helping others on their team or the program at large
•   Involvement in community service
•   Anticipated academic achievement
•   Citizenship
Sigurdarson was one of the top offensive players in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2022. A Second Team All-ACC selection, he finished with a career-high 12 goals and recorded a career-best 25 points this past season. He ranked fifth nationally in goals scored and was 10th in total points. He led the ACC in goals, goals per game. and points per game while ranking third in total points. Sigurdarson finished his BC career ranked sixth in goals (28) and seventh in points (64).

Sigurdarson also shined off the pitch, earning a spot on the ACC's Men's Soccer All-Academic team on three occasions. He helped the men's soccer program's efforts to raise money for the Newton Wellesley Hospital Auerbach Breast Center and played an active role with the Eagles' Team IMPACT match.Â

This past December, he earned his degree in finance from Boston College's Carroll School of Management and is currently embarking on his professional playing career in his home country of Iceland.

Mitchell will finish her Boston College career as one of the top middle-distance runners in the history of the program. She set a series of new program records during the indoor and outdoor track & field campaigns. During the 2023 indoor season, her record time of 2:03 flat propelled her to the ACC 800m Championship. She advanced to the NCAA Championship in the 800m, earning All-American honors. Mitchell was also a part of the school record 4x400m relay team at ACC's.

She began competition outdoors by setting new BC records in the 800m and 1500m runs in the first meet of the season, lowering the 800m mark to 2:02.66 and besting a 26-year record in the 1,500, running 4:14.85. In total, Mitchell holds three indoor records – 800m, 1,000-meter, and 4x400m relay – and two outdoor records – 800m and 1,500m.

A two-time All-ACC Academic team honoree, she was recognized by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as part of its 2022 All-Academic team. In February 2023, Mitchell was one of three recipients of the Thacker Award from the ACC – a postgraduate scholarship awarded to individuals who have performed with excellence and distinction in the classroom and in sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community. Mitchell has also served as a volunteer assistant track coach at her former high school in Lynnfield, Mass., and participated in the annual Adopt-a-Child Holiday gift drive, helping to fill wish lists for children and families in the community.

Presented to the male and female senior student athlete who best exemplify the spirit of hard work resulting in academic success and improved academic progress throughout their time at BC

Academic Advisors for Excellence
Presented annually to the male and female with the highest grade-point average of all student-athletes
Winners: Muzzy Donohue, Men's Golf and Rebecca Butler, Rowing
ACC Scholar-Athlete Award
In 2007, the ACC established the Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards to recognize academic achievement and athletic accomplishment. Boston College's nominees for the award were recognized tonight

SAAC Award
Presented to the student athlete who has committed themselves to enhancing the mission of SAAC of being the student athletes' voice and vehicle for helping to improve student athlete welfare and experience at Boston College, in the ACC and at the National level. This student athlete has gone above and beyond to create and contribute to the success of SAAC initiatives student athlete representation and creating a positive student athlete community.

Unsung Hero Award
Presented to the person who goes above and beyond to enhance Boston College Athletics and those around them
