May 22, 2023 | Sailing
Eagles will compete in Women's and Open Fleet Race National Championships over the next two weeks
KINGS POINT, N.Y. — Boston College Sailing will look to defend their Women's Fleet Race Title this week at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, with the 2023 Women's Fleet Race National Championship on deck from Tuesday, May 23 to Friday, May 26. The Eagles will follow that up with the Open Fleet Race National Championships from May 30th to June 2nd, earning spots in both events for the third consecutive year.
After taking home the title in 2022, the Women's Team enters the championship competition having placed 5th of 12 in the Women's Team Race National Championship, and 7th of 16 in the Women's Fleet Race Conference Championship.
"Very proud that the team continues to compete at the top of women's sailing," said Head Coach Greg Wilkinson. Excited for his team, Coach Wilkinson understands from experience the importance of the details when preparing for major championship events like these. "We talk a lot about the little things…they matter," said Coach Wilkinson. "It's easy to get distracted by the big event." Wilkinson and the Eagles will prioritize focus and concentration as they begin their title defense.
Beginning Tuesday, the Eagles will begin their chase for their second Women's Fleet Race National Championship in five years, with previous wins in '22 and '18. Boston College will return a strong group of women's sailors from last year's title team, including Isabella Gallo, Lilly Mathieu, Katelyn McGauley, Colleen O'Brien, Michaela O'Brien, Elizabeth Redmond, Sara Schumann, and Elizabeth Shanahan.
The 2023 Women's Fleet Race National Championship begins Tuesday, May 23 and will be broadcasted and updated live on collegesailing.org.
