Eagles Face Fighting Irish for Spot in Final Four
May 17, 2023 | Lacrosse
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - A sixth straight NCAA Final Four appearance is on the line when Boston College lacrosse hosts Notre Dame at Newton Lacrosse Field on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.Â
About the Eagles
Last Time Out
It was a solid defensive performance for BC in the win over the Quakers last Sunday, holding a Penn squad that came into the game averaging 14 goals a game to just seven. It's the fourth straight opponent BC has held to less than 10 goals. The Eagles held a 5-1 lead early in the first half before Penn slowly cut the deficit to one in the fourth quarter. The clutchness of Courtney and Cassidy Weeks came through as Courtney found her sister to extend the lead to two, helping BC to run out the clock for an 11th straight win at Newton in the postseason.Â
A Win Would
- Give BC a 12th straight win and a 12th straight victory at Newton in the postseason.Â
- Send the Eagles to their sixth consecutive Final Four.
- Give BC a 18-3 mark and a third win over Notre Dame this season.Â
Point-Getter
Mckenna Davis has racked up the points this season, where she is second on the team with 80 points and first with 55 assists. The sophomore attacker is one of two players in the country with at least 25 goals and 55 helpers, while she is top 10 in the country in scoring improvement. She totaled 31 points in her freshman campaign, giving her a 49-point jump. Davis reached the 100-career point mark earlier this season, which made her the 11th fastest player to reach the milestone.Â
When it MattersÂ
The Weeks are no strangers when coming up with big plays after sealing the first round triumph over Penn. Both Courtney and Cassidy have found their fair share of big-time moments when one or both deliver the game-winning or tying goal and assist.Â
The Weeks Connection
- Cassidy scored the game-winning goal in the 2022 Final Four against Maryland.Â
- Courtney Weeks goal at Notre Dame to cut the lead to one in the fourth quarter.
- Game-winning score by Cassidy from Courtney to beat the Fighting Irish.Â
- Combined for three goals in the fourth period in the come-from-behind win over Syracuse.Â
- Scored back-to-back goals against UNC in the ACC title game to start the 5-0 run.Â
Lockdown Defense
The Eagles' defensive unit continues to hold opposing offenses in check after limiting Penn to just seven scores. Boston College has held its foes to 10 or fewer goals in all four postseason games, while Shea Dolce has held it down between the cages with a .482 save percentage. Thirty-four of the 63 turnovers by the Eagles' opponents are caused. In addition, opponents are averaging just 21.8 shots per game during the postseason.Â
Series History
The Eagles are 15-8 all-time against the Fighting Irish after a pair of wins earlier this season. BC came back from a four-goal deficit in South Bend to upend the Irish before eliminating ND in the ACC Tournament. Boston College is 1-0 against Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament, with the previous matchup taking place in 2021 at Newton.Â
What's Next
With a win, the Eagles face the winner of No. 2 seed Syracuse and No.7 seed James Madison on Friday, May 26 in Cary, N.C.Â
