Boston College Unable to Even Series
April 07, 2023 | Baseball
Eagles squander early eight-run lead.
Â
BC jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Louisville rattled off nine unanswered runs between the second and fifth inning. The Cardinals got three in the second and five in the third against graduate right-hander Chris Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.). An error in the fifth allowed the game-winning run to score.
Â
Flynn was tagged for eight runs, all earned, on six hits and four walks. The Eagles chased Louisville lefty Greg Farone in the second inning after he gave up four runs on two hits and four walks.
Â
Boston College homered twice as it built its early lead beginning with a three-run shot by junior first baseman Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) in the first. Sophomore third baseman Nick Wang (Newton, Mass.) capped a five-run second with a two-run home run.
Â
The Cardinals' third reliever of the day was lefty Riley Phillips (4-0). He got the win with four-shutout innings and just one hit and one walk allowed with five strikeouts. Sophomore RHP Julian Tonghini (New Canaan, Conn.) got the loss for the Eagles. Tonghini (1-1) turned in three innings with one run, unearned, on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Â
The BC lineup managed just one hit after Wang's home run as junior second baseman Patrick Roche (Milton, Mass.) singled to complete a 2-for-3 game.
