CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Jerod Wims has been named an assistant coach for the men's and women's track & field team at Boston College, it was announced today by head coach Pete Watson. Wims joins his former coach at Boston College after one season at the University of Central Arkansas.Â
"Jerod is an exciting addition to the Boston College track and field program" said head coach Pete Watson. "Jerod was an All American sprinter at Auburn University while I was a coach there and from that time on I have watched him transform from a great athlete into a great sprints coach. Everywhere he has been he has made an immediate impact. When it came time to hire a sprints coach it became obvious very quickly he was the right guy to help us turn BC into a competitive track and field team at the ACC and NCAA level."
During his brief, yet successful stint at UCA, Wims played an integral role in developing a sprints group that would go on to break three school records and have two runners become ASUN Champions.
Prior to the University of Central Arkansas, Wims held the position of head men's and women's track & field and cross country coach at South Carolina State University for three seasons. There he would lead an NCAA All American, nine NCAA Regional Qualifiers, eight school record-breakers, and 10 MEAC Champions.
Wims joined Mercer as the interim head coach for track & field and cross country in 2016. He would go on to guide Mercer to set a program-best point total in three consecutive SoCon Championships from 2017-2019. During this stint, Wims developed a total of 16 school record-breakers and 11 SoCon Championship medalists.
Preceding his collegiate coaching career, Wims served as the head coach for track & field and cross country at Windsor Academy High School. He also held the position of Fire Sergeant for the City of Perry, Ga.
As a student-athlete, Wims contributed to a 4x100 meter relay team that broke seven straight records and qualified for the NCAA Championship as the third-ranked team in the entire east region. He received USA Junior All-American honors with a top-five 100 meter dash and seventh place in the 200 meter dash at the USA trials in 2005. His performance earned him a spot in the 2005 Pan Am games in Ontario, Canada.
