Defensive corps performs nicely in spring season finale at Alumni Stadium
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College held its annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring football game under picture-perfect skies this afternoon at Alumni Stadium. Â
At halftime, graduate student Elijah Jones was named the recipient of the Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship. The award has been given annually since 1993 to a Boston College defensive back who best exemplifies the personal qualities of team dedication and leadership by example, an extraordinary competitive spirit, and personal concern for family friends and teammates. McGillis, a starting defensive back for Boston College, passed away from Leukemia in 1992. The Eagles' spring game is played in his honor each year.
With the team divided into two units - Maroon (defense) and Gold (offense) - and a modified scoring system, the Maroon defensive corps took a 69-42 victory.
For the game, points were assigned to the following plays:
Offense:
Taji Johnson (41 yards), Alex Broome (24 yards), and Kyle Robichaux (22 yards) led the Gold team with three receptions apiece. In total, Eagles' receivers hauled in 25 catches for 237 yards. On the ground, Cam Barfield led the way with 22 yards on two carries, while Pat Garwo added 19 yards on eight rushes. Broome gained 13 yards on five carriers. BC piled up 117 yards on the ground.
Defensively, Alex Washington made four tackles, while Jones logged three. Amari Jackson registered two interceptions on the afternoon as the Eagles' defensive backfield shined with five total interceptions and eight pass breakups. There were six quarterback sacks - led by two from Kwan Williams and George Rooks - and five tackles for loss.
The game was played with a traditional two 15-minute quarters in the first half, while the second half was a 33-minute running clock and the team executed different situational plays.
Prior to the Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Football game, members of the football team and coaching staff took part in a Youth Combine and Clinic on the Alumni Stadium field. The combine and spring game were part of BC Athletics' Spring Fest afternoon.
