Post Recognized as ACC's Most Improved Player
March 06, 2023 | Men's Basketball
Is the first Boston College recipient of the major award; also earned All-ACC honorable mention honors
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Quinten Post was named the 2022-23 ACC Most Improved Player, it was announced today by the league office as part of ACC Network's "ACC PM" show. Â
He is the first BC player to earn the ACC's Most Improved Player award. Post earned 23 of the 75 votes among 11 different players who were nominated.
Post was also named to the 2022-23 All-ACC team, earning a spot among the honorable mention honorees. He is the fourth Eagle to receive All-ACC honorable mention accolades, joining Jerome Robinson (2016-17), Ky Bowman (2017-18), and Steffon Mitchell (2019-20).
Returning to the BC lineup after missing the first 13 games of the season, Post emerged as one of the top big men in the conference and in the country. He averaged 15.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game in 18 appearances. The 7-footer is one of 27 players nationally - and the only player in the ACC - to post those per game averages. He ranks 60th nationally - and fourth in the ACC - in points-assists-rebounds per 40 (PAR/40), with a metric of 34.9.
Â
Year-over-year, Post made one of the most transformative jumps among any player in the country. He is averaging nearly 6.0 points per game more, while significantly improving on his shooting percentages from the floor, the perimeter, and the foul line, all while close to doubling his shot rate from all areas of the floor. Â
Post is slightly under the 50/40/90 line for the season - 53.8% field goals; 44.0% 3-pointers; 85.4% free throws - and is the only player nationally posting those percentages (min. 10.0 ppg) in 2022-23. Since 1996-97, only one other player has posted those season averages (min. 10.0 ppg). Â
The Eagles saw a marked offensive improvement once he returned to the floor. In the 12 games without Post, BC averaged 64.3 points per game, while connecting on 41.3% from the floor, 26.6% from the perimeter, and 67.1% from the FT line - with a 0.79:1 assist/turnover rate.
In the 18 games with Post, BC is averaging 67.9 points (+3.6 ppg), is connecting on 45.3% of its field goals (+9.7% increase), 36.5% from beyond the arc (+37.2% increase), and 77.0% from the FT line (+14.8% increase) - with a 1.14:1 ATR. When Post played 25 minutes or more, Boston College was 8-5 overall, including 4-2 on the road. He averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.2 blocked shots in those games.
Post scored 20 or more points on six occasions and reached double figures 14 times. He recorded career-highs of 29 points and 14 boards at Notre Dame, following that up with 22 vs. Louisville and 24 at Virginia. He is one of two players in the ACC - and 28 nationally - to register a 29-point/14-rebound double-double this season. In the win at Virginia Tech, Post logged his second double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 boards.
He was a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc at Florida State - the first 7-footer to be perfect from the perimeter (min 5 FGM) March 17, 2017. On Feb. 11, he was 9-of-11 from the floor, good for 20 points against #22/22 N.C. State. The 81.8% single-game shooting percentage was the fifth-best mark in the ACC this season (min. 10 FGA).
Post is the first BC player since Ky Bowman in 2018-19 to score 22 or more points in three consecutive games. He is also the first BC player since Bowman in 2018-19 to register two double-doubles with 24 points or more.
He and the Eagles enter play in the 2023 New York Life ACC Tournament as the 10-seed and face 15th-seeded Louisville on Tuesday, March 7 at 4:30 p.m. ET at the Greensboro Coliseum. The game can be seen live on ACC Network.
