Eagles Walk Off SHU in Home Opener

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The No. 17 Boston College baseball team came from behind for an 8-7 walk-off win over Sacred Heart in its home opener at the Harrington Athletics Village on Wednesday evening. The Eagles improved upon their program-best start at 15-4, while the Pioneers dropped to 9-8.

Through four innings, BC trailed 7-3 and had allowed 12 hits. The Eagle bullpen allowed just one hit, a ninth-inning single, the rest of the way as the offense began its comeback.

Senior shortstop Vince Cimini (Scranton, Pa.) delivered the game-winner, a base hit to center with two on and one out in the bottom of the ninth. Junior second baseman Patrick Roche (Milton, Mass.) scored the game-winning run after leading off the inning with his fourth hit of the game.

Boston College tied the game in the sixth with four runs, the final three of which came after a dropped third strike extended the inning. Junior first baseman Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.), who had two hits on the day and reached on the dropped strike, scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

Graduate right-hander Andrew Roman (Monson, Mass.) pitched the ninth to earn his first win. RHP Mitch Hawkins (2-1) took the loss in 2.1 innings for SHU. He allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk.
