Eagles down Alabama and No. 5-Seeded Oklahoma State
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- JJ Bianchi and Jake Vassel continued to impress during their 2023 fall campaign, advancing to the quarterfinals of the ITA Fall National Doubles Championship this week. The duo's strong run ended just short on Friday, falling to the No. 3-seeded Michigan State 6-7, 3-6.
The Eagles began their run with a comeback victory over Alabama on Wednesday, answering a first-set loss 1-6 with 7-6 and [12-10] victories to advance into the Sweet 16.
Bianchi and Vassel would ride the momentum from Wednesday's win into their matchup against No. 5-seeded Oklahoma State, claiming the win 7-5, 6-3.
After putting up a valiant effort against the third seed Spartans, the doubles team was ultimately eliminated in a close contest. Michigan State entered the fall season ranked second nationally in the ITA pre-season rankings and would go on to win the tournament.
"JJ and Jake have had a great fall season and capped it off with a great run to the final 8 of The ITA Fall Masters" said head coach Scott Wilkins. "All of the matches were played at a high level and were extremely entertaining. JJ was as good as anyone in that tournament and Jake keeps improving every day and has helped prove that together they will be a difficult team to face this coming spring."
