Talented backcourt duo set to continue their academic and athletics careers at Boston College
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Nick Petronio and Luka Toews have signed their National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers as members of the Boston College men's basketball program.
We are thrilled to add Nick and Luka to the Boston College Men's Basketball Family," said the Clement and Elizabeth Izzi Family Head Coach Earl Grant. "Both young men have impeccable character, have demonstrated a strong work ethic and will to develop, and play with championship programs. Luka and Nick bring winning pedigrees to our program."Â
Petronio is a 6-3 combo guard from Needham, Mass. who is finishing up his final prep season at Milton Academy. He plays with Expressions Elite on the grassroots basketball circuit.
A 3-star rated recruit by Rivals, 247Sports, and On3, Petronio has established himself as one of the top shooters in the country. He connected on nearly 44% throughout the Nike EYBL circuits in 2022. New England Recruiting Report has him as the 10th best player in New England and eighth in Massachusetts.
An All-NEPSAC Class A selection and Boston Globe All-Scholastic honoree in 2021-22, he has helped Milton Academy to nearly 50 wins over the last two seasons. Last season, prior to suffering a season-ending knee injury in February, he helped position Milton as one of the top prep programs in the country. The Mustangs finished 2022-23 with a 20-2 overall record, including a 13-1 mark in NEPSAC play, en route to capturing the NEPSAC Class A title.
"I love Coach Grant and the whole coaching staff - I think they are very knowledgeable and people you want to be around. They believe in me and were there for me throughout my surgery and my recovery process. They are really turning things around and I just want to stay close to home to be a part of it," said Petronio.
Earl Grant on Nick Petronio
"Nick has a great competitive spirit about him. He's a big time scoring guard who really shoots the ball well from the 3-point line. He also has a great feel for creating his own shot and has a quick release. He will fit in well here because he's a gym rat and knows what takes to win. I look forward to see the impact he makes on our program. "
Toews is finishing his prep career locally at The Newman School in Boston. The 6-1 point guard was the primary playmaker for the Middlesex Magic, which captured the Under Armour NEXT circuit championship this past summer.Â
A 3-star rated recruit on 247Sports and On3, New England Recruiting Report has Toews ranked as the seventh best player in New England and sixth in Massachusetts.
Toews was a 2022-23 All-NEPSAC selection, averaging 14.0 points, 7.0 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game for The Newman School last season after transferring in from Northfield Mount Hermon. Originally from Kawasaki, Japan, he represented Team Asia at the 2023 Adidas Eurocamp in Italy this past June. His father Burke is a long-time basketball coach in Japan and his brother Kai starred at UNC Wilmington, earning CAA All-Rookie honors in 2018-19. His cousin Jonathan Toews was a standout hockey player, winning a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks and two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada in 2010 and 2014.
"I chose BC because I have a great connection with the coaching staff and I could have the chance to make an immediate impact in a Power 5 conference. Boston is a second home to me," Toews said.
Earl Grant on Luka Toews
"Luka brings great toughness and feel to our program. He has an uncanny way of leading a team from the point guard position. He excels at setting his teammates up and making everybody around him better. He's also a versatile scorer, with his ability to shoot the three, hit the midrange shot, and finish at the rim in different ways. I look forward to having him join our program."
