BC Heads to Iconic Classic in Las Cruces, N.M.
October 08, 2023 | Women's Golf
Three-day, 54-hole tournament to take place at the New Mexico State G.C.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College women's golf will travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to take part in the Iconic Classic from Oct. 9-11.
The tournament will be held at the New Mexico State Golf Course. Â Highlighted by beautiful scenery, the 18-hole layout is framed by the majestic Organ Mountains to the east and the picturesque Mesilla Valley to the west. Â University planning for the course began in 1958. Floyd Farley of Oklahoma City, a designer of more than 50 courses, was hired as the architect for the project. The construction began on March 1, 1961. Grass was planted four months later.
The course is long; championship distance is 6,084 yards for women and is a par 72.  Most greens have two to four sand traps each. Trees have been set in strategic locations at the corners of the doglegs, near tees and around greens. The course has four par-5 holes, 10 par-4 holes and four par-3 holes for men and women. Fairways are narrow – about 30 yards wide – and the roughs are difficult, filled with native creosote, mesquite, yucca and cactus.
