January 27, 2023 | Men's Hockey
BOSTON – No. 4 Boston University opened a weekend series against Boston College with a 6-3 Hockey East victory in the 289th Battle of Comm Ave on Friday night at Agganis Arena.
The Eagles suffered just the third loss in their last 10 visits to Agganis, falling to 9-8-5 overall and 5-5-4 in Hockey East, while the Terriers improved to 18-6-0 (12-4-0 HEA).
BC capitalized on the first power play of the night midway through the first period to open the scoring. Cutter Gauthier's right wing effort deflected off Andre Gasseau into the slot and Trevor Kuntar batted the puck past a sprawling Drew Commesso (24 saves) at 10:43.
BU tied the game at the first period buzzer when Jay O'Brien buried a loose puck from the top of the crease following a netfront scramble with 0.4 seconds on the clock.
Jeremy Wilmer cut into the slot and fired a shot under the crossbar glove at 6:48 of the second period to hand the Terriers their first lead. Dylan Peterson whacked a loose puck high glove side in heavy traffic from the slot at 12:32 to make it 3-1 after two.
Commesso made a key left pad save early in the third period to deny Seamus Powell his first career goal.
Ty Gallagher's one-timer during a 4-on-4 situation pushed the Terriers' advantage to 4-1 at 3:32 of the third. Gallagher then wristed a shot blocker side through a screen five and a half minutes later for a 5-1 cushion.
Following a Luke Tuch goal with 5:27 remaining, Mike Posma and Gauthier pulled a pair of goals back for the Eagles in the closing minutes. Rookies Gauthier (1-1-2) and Gasseau (0-2-2) each finished with multi-point nights.
Junior Henry Wilder played the final 8:36 in net, replacing starter Mitch Benson (26 saves).
The teams close the series on Saturday night at Kelley Rink with a 7 p.m. faceoff. Limited tickets remain for the series finale at (617) 552-GoBC or BCEagles.com.
