BC scored three second-half goals for a 3-1 win.
BOSTON – The Boston College women's soccer team topped Boston University, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon in the Battle of Commonwealth Avenue at Nickerson Field.
The Terriers took an early 1-0 lead and the edge held into halftime, but the Eagles scored three goals in the second half to earn the win.
Emily Sapienza converted a penalty kick in the 54th minute and then Sam Smith and Ella Richards scored two minutes apart to seal the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 12' | Abigail McNulty slid in the box to poke a ball over to Amy Thompson off of the right post, and Thompson was able to finish back across her body.
- 54' | After Ella Richards earned a penalty kick, Emily Sapienza stepped up and converted it with her right foot it in the opposite direction of the BU goalkeeper's guess.
- 72' | Laura Gouvin won the ball and then found Richards with a pass. Richards made a move, turned on her defender and carried the ball towards the box before taking on one more defender and slotting a pass to the left to Sam Smith. The captain took a touch and sent a high-left footed finish past the charging goalkeeper.
- 74' | Emily Sapienza won a ball on the right flank and from the edge of the box sent in a cross that Richards one-touched inside the right post.
- Boston University held the 16-13 lead in shots … Boston College had a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.
- The Terriers held a 4-3 lead in corner kicks.
- Eagles' goalkeeper Wiebke Willebrandt made three saves in moving to 4-1-1.
- Boston College is now 24-5-1 all-time in the series against Boston University and 21-5-1 in contests in which both schools are varsity programs.
- The Eagles now own a seven-game unbeaten streak against the Terriers.
- Sam Smith and Ella Richards led BC and tied for a game-high three shots.
- Emily Sapienza finished with a career-high three points on one goal and one assist.
- Sam Smith scored her fourth goal of the season … she now has 48 career points on 21 goals and 42 points and six assists.
- Smith's goal was the sixth game-winning goal of her career.
- The Eagles will head to Providence on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match against the Friars.
