Phil Jurkovec throws for more than 300 yards in the victory; Zay Flowers moves into fifth place all-time in receptions at BC
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College used a robust passing attack en route to a 38-17 victory over Maine on Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.
Phil Jurkovec surpassed 300 yards passing for the first time this season, going 25-37 for 320 yards and two touchdowns - connecting with Zay Flowers and George Takacs in the end zone. Flowers finished with eight catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Late in the third quarter, Flowers moved into fifth place all-time on Boston College's receptions list. He now has 144 career catches. Takacs made seven catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Maine got the scoring going with 6:15 left in the opening quarter, after a 45-yard field goal made it 3-0. But the Eagles responded, as Jurkovec found Zay Flowers on a pinpoint pass for a 51-yard touchdown strike. The scoring drive covered 55 yards on five plays.
Maine would take the ensuing kickoff 73 yards, deep into Eagles' territory and would need just two plays to cover the remaining 22 yards, making it 10-7 in favor of the Black Bears.
Jurkovec would dial long distance again, connecting on a 53-yard dart to Jaden Williams, setting up a two-yard connection to George Takacs with 1:12 left in the opening frame, putting BC ahead 14-10.
Williams would find the end zone again, taking it nine yards for the score - BC's first rushing TD of the season - to make it 21-10 with 12:04 to go in the half. Patrick Garwo III's one-yard plunge into the end zone with 1:08 left in the opening frame made it 28-10. Jason Maitre's interception in the end zone ended the half with BC leading by 18.
BC extended its lead to 31-10 early in the third, as Connor Lytton connected from 46-yards out. Maine responded on its next drive, finding the end zone after an eight-play, 75-yard drive, making it 31-17 with 7:44 left in the third.
The Eagles sealed the deal late in the fourth as Patrick Garwo scored on a 30-yard rushing touchdown up the middle of the field with 1:48 left in the game to close the game 38-17. Garwo carried the ball 17 times for 78 yards and two scores.
Vinny DePalma led BC with eight tackles - six solo. Josh DeBerry (six solo) and Jaiden Woodbey (five solo) each logged seven tackles. Donovan Ezeiruaku, Marcus Valdez, and Cam Horsley each logged a sack. Jason Maitre and Kam Arnold each tallied an interception.
Boston College returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 24 when it travels to Florida State for an 8 p.m. kickoff at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. The game will air live on ACC Network.
