BC opens conference play with decisive 2-1 victory
Sarah Johnson found Martina Giacchino on the corner insert, who laid it up for Hale to drive the shot past the diving goalie into the left corner, putting the Eagles up 1-0. The Eags would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.Â
Coming into the third quarter with a 1-0 advantage, BC wasted no time in putting some insurance on the board. Under a minute into the second half, Victoria Arra batted down a clear attempt from Virginia, taking it herself into the circle before unleashing a strike to beat the goalie in the right corner.Â
Virginia battled back with a penalty conversion of their own, trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth quarter. Junior goalie Emily Gillespie made her first start of the season for BC, and preserved the lead late in the third quarter with a lunging save off a penalty corner, earning her first win of the season.
Peyton Hale and Victoria Arra both added to their co-lead in team goals, each scoring their third goal of the season in the victory. Martina Giacchino and Sarah Johnson added their second assists of the season as well.
The Eagles will look to keep it rolling this Sunday at noon vs. Monmouth.
