Eagles Explode in Second Half for Season-Opening Win
August 25, 2022 | Men's Soccer
NEWTON, Mass. – Boston College exploded for four goals in the second half and pulled away from Quinnipiac for a 5-2 victory over the Bobcats in the season opener for both teams on Thursday afternoon at the Newton Soccer Complex.
Stefan Sigurdarson recorded a brace for the Eagles with his first two goals of the season, while newcomers Camilo Ponce and Adrian Zenko both had three-point performances with a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Diego Ochoa also tallied a goal on a free kick during the four-goal second half. Amos Shapiro-Thompson, Victor Souza and Jack Burgess all collected assists in the win.
After a Noah Silverman goal for QU opened the scoring just 18 seconds into the match, Ponce equalized by heading a Souza cross into the top left corner in the 38th minute for the rookie's first collegiate goal.
Zenko handed the Eagles their first lead in the 68th minute, firing a low half-volley into the bottom left corner from the edge of the 18-yard box. Less than three minutes later, Sigurdarson finished a centering pass near the six-yard box from Shapiro-Thompson for a 3-1 lead.
Ochoa's first career goal came on a low, driven free kick from the edge of the Quinnipiac box which the lefty bent inside the far post.
Jason Budhai pulled a goal back for the Bobcats within a minute, but Zenko's lofted ball played Sigurdarson in on goal for a routine finish in the 82nd minute to cap the scoring.
Boston College improved to 13-2-1 all-time against Quinnipiac and out-shot the Bobcats 19-3. UNC Asheville transfer Leon Musial posted the win in his BC debut.
The Eagles return to action next Monday (Aug. 29) when they host Northeastern at 5:30 p.m.
