Barry Gallup to Retire After 46 Years with Boston College Football

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior Associate Athletic Director for Football & Alumni Relations Barry Gallup '69, who has spent more than 45 years at Boston College as a player, coach and administrator, has announced his retirement.

"Barry Gallup has dedicated most of his professional life to Boston College and the BC Football program, and he has left a significant and lasting impact on both our school and our team," said Gregory P. Barber '69 and Family Head Coach Jeff Hafley. "We wish Barry, his wife Victoria, and his family all the best in a truly well-deserved retirement."

After serving as the Director of Football Operations for 12 years from 2000-12, Gallup has held his current administrative role with the program since 2013. He has been instrumental in connecting alumni from all eras of the program over the last two decades.

A Swampscott native, Gallup came to the Heights in 1965 and played three years of varsity football as a tight end from 1966-69 under head coach Joe Yukica. He also played two years on the basketball team for Bob Cousy and was a member of the 1967 Elite 8 squad.

After two years as the head coach of the BC freshman football team, Gallup was hired to coach the defensive line on the varsity squad from 1972-80. He then spent 10 years as the recruiting coordinator and coach of the wide receivers, tight ends and kickers for head coach Jack Bicknell.

Gallup later spent a decade (1990-99) as the head football coach at Northeastern, three of which he also served as the department's athletic director, before returning to the Heights in 2000 under Tom O'Brien.

In 22 years as an administrator and 18 years as a varsity coach, he has worked for nine different head football coaches at Boston College. The renovated 4,000 square foot sports medicine center for Boston College Football was recently named the Barry Gallup '69 Sports Medicine Center.

Gallup and his wife, Victoria, reside in Wellesley where they raised their three children, Darren, Lisa, and Barry, Jr. Barry, Jr. and his wife, Samantha, have two children, Colette and Darren.
